As the daughter of an educator and a Tuskegee Airman, Judge Angela Z. Brown had instilled in her from an early age the importance of hard work, sound education and overcoming all obstacles. She attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and graduated Salutorian in 1985.  Although receiving numerous track scholarships, Judge Brown accepted an academic scholarship to the Ivy League and attended Brown University.  In 1989, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.  After being awarded the Dean’s Outstanding Scholar Full Academic Scholarship, Judge Brown attended the University of San Diego Law School where she received her J.D. in 1993. She was the first African American to receive that law school scholarship as well as the first to receive the Thurgood Marshall Graduation Award three years later. She is still very much involved with the recruitment of underrepresented groups in both her undergraduate and law school alma maters.

Judge Brown has been an attorney for approximately 25 years and has a wealth of legal experience in diverse areas.  She began her professional career as a litigation associate in the law firm of Davis Wright Tremaine in Seattle, Washington. She has prosecuted criminals as an Assistant District Attorney in the Prosecutor’s Offices located in King County, Washington; Union County, New Jersey; and Cobb County, Georgia. Judge Brown made history as the first African American ADA ever in Cobb County, Georgia. She counseled corporations about compliance as an environmental associate at Porzio, Bromberg and Newman in New Jersey and later protected the well being of miners and the environment while working as the first African American in-house attorney at ASARCO, Inc., New York, New York.  Before her appointment to the bench, Judge Brown successfully ran her own litigation firm, specializing in criminal, family, personal injury and guardian ad litem law.  She has conducted 1000’s of trials on all sides of the bench and has taught others how to be an effective, knowledgeable attorney of integrity. Her Mentees can be found in the government sector, the private sector and even on the bench.

Judge Brown has been honored to serve as a Judge by Designation for the State Courts of Dekalb and Cobb County, the Recorders Court of Dekalb County and the Superior Court of Dekalb County. As such, she has run an efficient, streamlined courtroom while conducting arraignments, adoptions, bench trials, pleas, civil hearings and criminal probation revocations.  Her philosophy is to thoroughly listen to both sides of the case, apply the law fairly, and treat everyone with courtesy, dignity and respect.  Currently, running her own law firm, it is that wealth of experience she brings to advocating for her clients in both criminal and family law cases. She also sits as a Municipal Judge Pro Tempore with the City of Lithonia.
